Joshua

We have actually photographed Joshua’s family for a while.  We photographed his parent’s wedding, his big brother, and now him.  It is so great to watch and capture how a family changes and grows.  He was unsure about us at first but quickly warmed up to Mr. Alex.  We had a blast in the camera room and was able to capture him very naturally as he truly is!

Greyson’s Portrait Session

Greyson’s mom was so excited (but nervous) about having his portrait done!  She came to us because of a friend that we had photographed previously and just fell in love with our style.  Greyson was such a cutie.  He loves playing golf.  In fact, he has his own set of clubs and goes along with dad to play.  Too much fun!  Mom wanted a classic portrait of her little boy to capture who he is right now before that “baby look” disappears.  I know she can’t wait to hang these portraits in her home.

Vacation Photo tips

Five tips for your vacation photos

Tip 1-dealing with the bright sun.

If at all possible try to avoid the bright sun, because open shade always works best. But sometimes you just cannot avoid the bright sun, so in cases where the bright sun is not avoidable when you’re photographing a person always try to have their back to the sun so they won’t have squinty eyes (in the next tip we will talk about dealing with the sun to a person’s back). If you’re photographing scenery or an object such as a building there’s just not much you can do about the sun. Early morning or late afternoon work the best!

Tip 2-using fill flash on your camera

With today’s digital cameras it just makes sense to let the flash do the work for you in some cases. If photographing someone outdoors when the sun is out and bright or if it is 12 noon and the sun is right above the person always try to have their back to the sun. This is a great time to use your camera’s flash. Most cameras have a function called fill flash and this is where all the inner workings of the camera does the computing for you; which will enable you to get a nice photograph of your subject without having dark circles under their eyes are having the background look really nice and you have a silhouette of your subject. I would highly recommend reading the manual that came with your camera because it can give you great insight on the functionality of fill flash for that particular camera.

Tip 3-backing up your images

One of the biggest advantages of using a digital camera to capture your vacation photographs is you can make a copy of all your images before you ever leave vacation (providing you have your laptop computer or access to a computer with you). If you have your laptop computer with you while on vacation you can make a copy of your images from your camera to your computer every day. Yes that will give you duplicated copies of everything on your card but at this point it is better to be safe than sorry. But let’s say you’re on vacation and you were not able to bring a computer with you. The best thing is to use multiple memory cards. With the price of memory cards being fairly inexpensive you could use a memory card every two days and of course it is what ever you feel comfortable with. Just don’t keep photographing on the same card for the entire vacation because cameras malfunction, memory cards malfunction, you can lose the memory card, by using multiple memory cards during your vacation. This just gives you a peace of mind that you will have all your images with you (using just one memory card is like the old statement: “putting all your eggs in one basket”).

Tip 4-it’s not about the camera

One thing that I have always said “it’s not the camera that visually makes the photograph it’s the person behind the camera that makes the photograph art”. To give you a great example of this; on our blog we do something every Thursday called “iPhone Thursday”. These are just random images that I have taken with the iPhone and have manipulated them with software on the iPhone. Regardless of the type of camera you have, put your heart and soul into what you are photographing.

Tip 5-have fun

This is the most important tip: HAVE FUN! Now that everyone has a digital camera you can take as many photographs as you want without spending a ton of money on film. Just don’t become so overwhelmed with taking photographs that you forget to have fun with your family while on vacation. Going on vacation is about memories and relaxation, so capture the memories of your vacation with your camera but relax while doing it and just have fun.

Take a Break this Summer

Healthy LoungeThe local business spotlight for the month of June is Healthy Lounge. Healthy Lounge is located downtown Greenville, right by the river, on Main Street. Becky and I went into Healthy Lounge a few months ago for the very first time and the smoothies are amazing.   Probably one of the biggest benefits of getting to know Healthy Lounge this summer is they make really good smoothies and natural energy drinks.

If you’re downtown with the kids make sure you stop in for a smoothie, the kids will love it, and the good thing is it is healthy for you and the kids.  My personal favorite shake is the peanut butter cup shake. You can go to Healthy Lounge’s website to look at all the services they provide, so if you spend any time downtown this summer make sure you stop by Healthy Lounge and enjoy a healthy smoothie shake. Healthy Lounge’s website is www.healthylounge.com

And remember it is important to support local businesses, so my plans are once a month to do just a little spotlight blog post on local businesses here in Greenville and tell you a little bit about them.

Candid Portraits

Day in the Park

Day in the park

If you are not familiar with our “Day in the Park” photography let me tell you a little bit about it. The “Day in the Park” photography is great for children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old, because we are able to follow them around and capture them playing and exploring outside without them being aware of what is taking place. By doing this we are able to capture the fun and everyday expressions that you see from them at home. Another neat thing is; if you are used to posed photography this will be something totally different for you and it gives you a great opportunity to start building a tradition of having candid frame sets in your home in addition to your large, formal wall portraits. When you reserve us for a “Day in the Park” session during July you will receive a custom DVD slideshow and pay no session fee when you purchase a wall portrait and a frame set. Call us today to book your Day in the Park!

Brandon’s Black and White Portrait

Brandon’s mom wanted something special of her son who attends the Governor’s School here in Greenville.  He brought along his instrument but her favorite was the image of him in the middle!  It just captured his true personality.  Just like mom says, “he just talks with his eyes”!  I know Brandon’s parents are so proud!!

A gorgeous setting for a portrait!

Kim came to us to have a portrait done of her husband and herself.  They always have had portraits taken of their only daughter and all three of them but she really wanted something of just the two of them this time.  She has a friend who owns some property in Spartanburg and it was just gorgeous!  You felt like you were in a different world with the waterfall and all the wooded areas and flowers.  It was breathtaking and I know her friend is so proud of all the hard work he put into it!  This setting was just perfect for Kim and her husband.  These are just a few of her favorites from the session.  I know she can’t wait to hang these portraits in her home.   Phil Hyman Photography
