FAQ

What are your hours?

Monday through Thursday between 9:30am to 5:00pm

Friday between 9:30am to 12:30pm

Saturday by appointment only

What is better, indoors or outdoors?

It all depends on how you want your portrait captured.  If you choose an outdoor session then you desire a portrait that is more casual by nature and more environmental which means the background is just as important as the subjects.  If you choose an indoor session then you desire a simple and classic portrait where the focus is more on personalities and the background is not a focal point.

What is the best time to photograph my child?

Children (no matter what age) are always better in the morning hours rather than afternoon.  Their mood is crisp and fresh in the morning and not tired like in the afternoon and you know (as parents) that children react totally different than adults when they are tired.

What is the best time of day for outdoor sessions?

It all depends on who is in the session.  If we are photographing just small children then we must start the session at 9:30am but when photographing families, we start our sessions at 5:30pm because of lighting.  If it is in the fall season especially after Daylight Savings time, we may start as early at 3:30pm.

How long have you been in business?

Our studio is a family, owned and operated business.  Phil started his photography business 36 years ago.  Alex has grown up in the business and has been photographing alongside his father for almost 20 years.

I want to be a photographer!  Where should I start?

Being a professional photographer is more than just going to “Best Buy” and purchasing a camera to photograph your neighbor’s children.  If you are truly serious and you want to make this your business the first step is to enroll at the local technical college and take business and photography classes.  These “business and marketing” classes will teach you how to properly price and market your photography.  The next step is to join photography organizations such as Professional Photographers of America or the Professional Photographers of South Carolina to learn from talented and successful photographers in the our industry.  Passion + Knowledge + Experience + Great service and customer experience = “the start of a business people can connect with.”

I want to have a photograph done but are your more expensive than others?

Yes, we are a little more expensive but when you come to Phil Hyman Photography, you get more than just a “picture”.  (like momma always said  “You get what you pay for.”)  We are a full-service portrait studio and we provide quality, experience, and service that you will not find anywhere else.  The moment you walk through our door, we consider you to be more than just a client.  We want to get to know you and your family so well that you would consider us as friends and entrust us to capture special moments in your family’s life.

I don’t know what size portrait I should get!

We highly recommend walking through your home and pick out several spots that you would consider for portraits.  For example:  your living room (over the fireplace and/or the sofa), dining room, foyer or entrance way, bedrooms, & etc…  Measure these spots for “appropriate size” leaving enough room for your frame.  Even after all that, if you are still unsure, we will be happy to come to your home and personally measure the spots and give you recommendations.  Always remember you are not in this alone,  we are here to help you any way we can!

I’m confused on what to do, can someone help me?

It is so easy to get confused on the type of session to do because there are so many possibilities and options.  That is way we schedule an initial “planning session” before the actual photography session.  This planning session is where we get to know your wants and needs plus guide you on which direction is best, type of clothing to wear, and size of portraits to display.  So when the photography session comes about, there are no questions or worries.

What kind of packages do you have?

We are a Custom Boutique Photography Studio and specialize in Wall Portraits and other Heirloom and Specialty products. We have found that packages restrict our clients, so we do not have any packages. We customize every order to the needs of each family. We have also combined various sizes and types of prints and created several arrangements and artistic groupings that will help you decorate your home.

I have some old pictures that needs to be fixed.

We do provide a copy/restoration service.  Every damaged picture is different so we will need to schedule a consultation with our retouch artist so that she can thoroughly examine the damage plus show you other restorations that we have done.
